If Premier Danielle Smith was looking to bask in the glow of a political victory, an ideal and obvious backdrop would surely have been the friendly confines of a major UCP gathering.

As it turned out, however, the new Alberta-Ottawa memorandum of understanding (MOU) proved to be somewhat of an albatross for the premier at her party’s annual general meeting over the weekend.

Instead of walking in as the conquering hero, the premier faced boos from the crowd when she mentioned — or dared to tout — the agreement. The ovations and adulations she sought eventually came, but only after her speech veered onto different topics.

Of course, none of that takes away from the significance of the MOU or makes it any less of a win for Smith.
