Drivers plan to resort to illegal measures to escape the new 3p per mile car tax from the Labour Party government, it has been warned.
Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves has been warned that her pay-per-mile electric car tax will lead to a surge in mileage fraud. The new 3p per mile charge will be based on annual odometer readings during MOTs.
But there are fears electric vehicle (EV) owners could try to underpay by “clocking” their vehicles to wind back mileage. Toby Poston, the BVRLA chief executive, said: “The Government’s plan for a new pay-per-mile eVED (EV excise duty) tax from 2028 is the wrong policy at the wrong time.
