A personalized license plate in British Columbia that reads "FIVE-0" is set to be recalled by ICBC, a decade after it was first issued. Jimmy Jay, a resident of Kamloops, received a letter from ICBC last week informing him of the decision. The insurance company stated that vanity plates cannot reference law enforcement, and "Five-0" is commonly associated with police. Jay expressed his surprise at the recall. "I was totally caught off-guard there, totally surprised," he said. He has held the plate for nearly ten years and believes he should be exempt from the recall. "If they had wanted to, they could have recalled it earlier. I just don’t want to give it up," he added. Jay, who previously worked as a police officer in the 1990s, also has a personal connection to the term due to his fondness for the TV series "Hawaii Five-0," which popularized the phrase. He noted that his forklift at work is also numbered 5-0. ICBC acknowledged the emotional significance of the plate for Jay. "We understand this personalized plate may hold special meaning for the customer," said spokesperson Lindsay Wilkins in an email. Wilkins explained that ICBC periodically reviews personalized license plates to ensure compliance with program guidelines. These guidelines prohibit references to law enforcement, religion, politics, and public figures. The reference to law enforcement was not identified when Jay applied for the plate. To assist Jay, ICBC has offered to provide a replacement plate at no cost and suggested alternatives, such as "FORK 50." Wilkins stated, "Our goal is to make the process as straightforward as possible and ensure the customer feels supported." Despite the options, Jay is reluctant to change. "If I can’t have that [FIVE-0] plate, I just don’t want one, you know. I’ll just go with a regular plate," he said. He has been instructed to return the plate by the end of December, marking the end of his decade-long association with the "FIVE-0" license plate.
