COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - The Gulf Coast Blood Center is experiencing a platelet shortage and is urging the public to donate.

Bobbie Benjamin, Gulf Coast Blood Collections Manager, said donations typically slow down during this time of year, but the need for platelets remains constant.

“People coming in to donate definitely slows down, but the need for platelets never slows down,” Benjamin said.

The Gulf Coast Blood Center serves as the area’s only 24/7 blood provider. Benjamin said there is a constant need for platelets because of their short shelf life.

“Your platelets are replaced about every week. They have the shortest shelf life of everything, and so that’s why we’re in that constant need of platelets,” Benjamin said.
