Zach Scheiman, an employee at Garden City Regional Airport, has been killed in action at Stepnohirsk, Ukraine, while serving with Ukrainian Special Forces in that country’s war with Russia.
The Garden City airport on Dec. 1 made the announcement on its Facebook page .
Scheiman had been an air traffic controller the past 11 years for that airport, the post said.
The Facebook post didn't say when Scheiman died.
Kansas formerly served in the U.S. Air Force
The airport's Facebook post announcing his death said Scheiman spent many days in his youth at the airport helping with events, taking photos of aircraft and observing his father, Mike Scheiman, in the air traffic control tower.
Zach Scheiman then served in the U.S. Air Force before returning to Garden City to work as an air traffic
