A late-night apartment fire in Maryland sent two people to the hospital Monday after flames broke out inside an eight-story building in Hillcrest Heights, fire officials said.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS said crews were called around 9:30 p.m. Monday to the 3200 block of Curtis Drive, where firefighters arrived to find fire showing from the fourth floor of a multi-family building.

Firefighters got the flames out and reported all searches were negative. EMS crews then began evaluating residents who evacuated the building, officials said.

In an update posted at 11:15 p.m., PGFD said one person was transported in critical condition, while a second adult was also taken to a hospital with “serious but not life threatening injuries” after slipping down steps while trying to get out of the building.

Fire investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.
