Iused to wonder how Germany could have fallen for a man like Adolph Hitler. I no longer wonder about that.
I recently read a quote from Protestant church leaders in Germany in the '30s who saw Hitler’s rise to power as a real gift from God for uplifting the nation. The hatred of Jews was already there, but they apparently accepted it.
Most German people would not themselves have murdered Jews, but they had been simmered in anti-Jewish ideas for centuries going back to Luther and beyond. They were willing to believe the most incredible (unbelievable) conspiracies, including that Jews were killing children for blood sacrifices.
