Marks and Spencer has been flooded with complaints over its advent calendar - with Christmas now weeks away. Shoppers who got their hands on the £60 “25 Days of Beautiful” calendar began opening it yesterday, to mark December 1.

One shopper @catwearsblack, who says she gets the M&S beauty advent calendar “every Christmas”, led the criticism. “Marks and Spencer has messed up with day one of its advent calendar, and I’m going to show you why,” she said.

She added: “Can you spot the deliberate mistake? Number one is not present on the top of the box. Now surely when you’re designing an advent calendar, putting number one on the top layer is basic common sense.”
