The college football coaching carousel continues to spin, but some schools want out of the madness. They don't want to deal with a coaching vacancy and having to hire a new coach for this cycle. Add Boston College to that list. The program is retaining coach Bill O'Brien, as reported by Pete Nakos of On3 Sports.

Boston College was dreadfully bad this season. The Eagles went 2-10 and are stuck in the lower half of an ACC that wasn't very good to begin with in 2025. Why retain O'Brien? Reason one: He has coached only two full seasons. Boston College doesn't have the money or clout to be a "quick trigger" program where coaches immediately get fired.

Reason two: Boston College just hired a new general manager, Kenyatta Watson. BC hired Watson away from Auburn, so that seems like an impressive and ambitious move. Getting a general manager with SEC experience is an obvious attempt to give Bill O'Brien better groceries. The coach might be able to cook with higher-quality ingredients.

If Kenyatta Watson knows how to shop, Boston College might find a winning recipe sooner than a lot of people think. Bill O'Brien needs help building his roster, and the Eagles are making a good-faith attempt to accomplish that goal. Retention was and is the right move for this program at this time.
