Health officials are urging the public to take precautions against the 'winter vomiting bug' as cases continue to circulate during the colder months.

Norovirus can be contracted through close contact with an infected person, touching contaminated surfaces or objects and then one's mouth, or consuming food or water that has been contaminated.

The highly contagious virus can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as high temperature, pain in the stomach area and aching limbs.

Symptoms typically start within 12 to 48 hours after infection, with most people making a full recovery within two or three days. However, some high-risk groups, such as young children, the elderly or those with weakened immunity, could suffer more serious illness after infect
