A New York State trooper shot and killed a dog after being bitten while responding to a call at a Sullivan County home.

The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 1, when a trooper arrived at a residence on Hemlock Court in Fallsburg for a reported dog bite, a State Police spokesperson told Daily Voice.

As the trooper approached the home’s front door, a dog ran out through a pet door and charged at him, biting his lower leg, police said.

The trooper ran down the porch steps and into the yard to create distance, but the dog again charged aggressively, according to police. The trooper then fired his agency-issued firearm, killing the animal.

The trooper was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center – Catskills for evaluation of the bite.

State Police investigators are reviewing the circumstances of the attack and the trooper’s response, an agency spokesperson told Daily Voice.
