The publisher of the popular children’s book series “Franklin the Turtle” has issued a strong condemnation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent meme, which depicts the character shooting at drug traffickers.

Hegseth shared the picture on Sunday via X , titling it “Franklin Targets Narco Terrorists.” The image shows the cartoon turtle in military gear, firing a rocket-propelled grenade toward a drug smuggling vessel while standing in a helicopter.

“For your Christmas wish list...,” the defense secretary’s caption for the post reads.

On Monday, the publisher of Franklin, Kids Can Press shared a statement on X in response to Hegseth’s meme.

“Franklin the Turtle is a beloved Canadian icon who has inspired generations of children and stands for kindness, empathy, and inclusivity,”
