Lynn Harris, who is 82, is a volunteer at St. David’s Medical Center, in Austin.

I grew up in Chicago. I never thought I’d leave, but in 1965 my draft number came up, and I entered the Army. I was 23. Although I didn’t have any medical background, they made me a medic. I served in Vietnam, and when I finished my tour, I moved around for a couple of years with my wife and ended up in San Antonio.

I had a long career selling abrasives, but eighteen years ago, after I retired, I began volunteering at St. David’s Medical Center.
