The outbreak of measles in and around Spartanburg County spiked with 14 new cases, double the amount reported at the last update, and four new schools where nearly 140 people are in quarantine, the South Carolina Department of Public Health reported Dec. 2.
The outbreak, first reported exactly two months ago, has now reached 76 cases, with 79 total in the state this year, public health said. There were seven new cases reported at the last update on Nov. 28. The vast majority of those infected were unvaccinated, the agency said.
The majority of the new cases, eight people, were from a previously reported exposure at Way of Truth Church in Inman. Others are still under investigation. The state has noted that many cases are likely from unknown exposure in the community.
