We open on JOY, a brunette in a miniskirt, a Christmas sweater and tights. She’s outside on a busy street in a nondescript financial district-type city location, wearing a winter hat and gloves and carrying a tray full of to-go coffee cups stamped with the words “Portland Coffee.”
It is raining.
She is wearing earbuds and talking animatedly to someone on the phone.
JOY: But I have to go! This could be my nana’s last Christmas working the Christmas tree farm!
JOY: Well, yes, I know they hired my high school sweetheart to help out this season, but Nana could die any day! She’s 97 years old! I took a whole week off from my job as secretary for an important shoe and athletic apparel company!
JOY: If you go to the Bahamas for a work conference over the holiday, consider us on a break!
