BISHOPVILLE, S.C. — An inmate at Lee Correctional Institution has died following an assault inside the facility, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC).

Officials said 37-year-old Mario Leven Harrison died Monday at a local hospital after he was assaulted in a common area of his living unit.

SCDC is investigating the case as a suspected homicide.

The agency’s Inspector General’s Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Crime Scene Unit and the Lee County Coroner.

An autopsy will be performed, according to SCDC.

No additional details about the circumstances of the assault or possible suspects have been released.
