President Donald Trump has promised to send National Guard troops to New Orleans before Christmas, according to Gov. Jeff Landry. The announcement comes as planned Border Patrol immigration raids have already sparked protests in the city.
In September, Landry requested up to 1,000 Guard members from the Department of Defense, citing rising crime in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Shreveport. Local leaders have expressed concerns over how the deployment would work.
Speaking at an event commemorating victims of the Jan. 1 terror attack on Bourbon Street on Monday, Landry said Trump had personally committed to the deployment. “He said, 'Don't worry Jeff, we'll have them there in two weeks,’” Landry recalled.
