Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz could be facing trial in May.
U.S. District Court Judge Kiyo Matsumoto said Dec. 2 that jury selection would tentatively begin May 4 in Brooklyn Federal Court. The trial could then begin in the following days or weeks.
Clase and Ortiz are each facing up to 65 years in prison for their alleged roles in a sports gambling scheme . They have been charged with wire fraud conspiracy, honest services wire fraud conspiracy, conspiracy to influence sporting contests by bribery and money laundering conspiracy.
Clase and Ortiz, who have both entered not guilty pleas , are due back in court Jan. 15. The 23-page indictment alleges Clase and Ortiz colluded with betters to win them fraudulent bets by purposefully throwing balls in certain situ
