Michigan State has a new head football coach.

Pat Fitzgerald will be officially introduced Tuesday as the Spartans' head coach at a news conference on the MSU campus, starting at 3 p.m. The former Northwestern head coach signed a contract Monday .

Fitzgerald, who turned 51 on Tuesday, will helm the Spartans after a three-year hiatus following 17 years at Northwestern. Fitzgerald’s teams went 110-101 overall, 65-76 in the Big Ten. Fitzgerald’s teams won 10 games three times, and 10 times he took the program to a bowl, where he had a 5-5 record. Twice, Northwestern won the Big Ten West during his time with the program.

Fitzgerald follows Jonathan Smith, who was fired Sunday after two seasons .
