Michigan construction projects may have another pavement option following a successful trial use of “highly modified asphalt” in Livingston County.

A stretch of I-96 near Grand River Avenue in Brighton was rebuilt last month with a new asphalt material -- known as HiMA -- that’s expected to be more durable than conventional asphalt. It was the state’s first use of the material.

While HiMA isn’t likely to replace cheaper alternatives, it could prove beneficial for short segments, particularly those in need of rapid repairs or that have a lot of heavy truck traffic.
