Penn State won its all-important sixth game of the year to earn a bowl game at Rutgers last Saturday, but it might not have done so without the help of one defensive star.
Junior linebacker Amare Campbell was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the 40-36 win. Campbell made 14 tackles — just shy of his season-high of 15 — with a half of a sack.
However, his biggest impact came on a wild fourth-quarter play.
Rutgers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis inexplicably dropped the ball as he looked to throw, leading to Campbell scooping the fumble and running 61 yards for a touchdown.
That flipped a 36-33 Rutgers lead on its head, and Penn State did not relinquish the lead from that point.
It was the first touchdown of Campbell’s career.
