It may feel like an eternity ago, but it was just in 2022 that Serena Williams played in what was then her last professional match, a U.S. Open loss to Ajla Tomljanovic that ended her storied career in the sport.
But... could she be coming back?
Here's what we know: Per ESPN, she has "reentered the International Tennis Integrity Agency's (ITIA) registered testing pool, potentially clearing the way for a return to the sport."
There's also a report from reporter Ben Rothenberg backing that up, with more: "Serena had first sought reinstatement this past August, weeks before this year’s U.S. Open, likely to play doubles in New York with her sister, Venus. But such short-notice spontaneous comebacks by officially retired players are not permitted."
There's no word from Williams or her agent, so we'll see if this means anything hopefully soon. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Literally the moment we published this, we saw Williams' tweet:
So seems like... no?
What is Serena Williams' age?
