POWNAL – A do not drink notice for Pownal Fire District No. 2 water customers was expected to be lifted as early as Tuesday, once the state confirmed follow-up testing.
Mark Smith, chair of the water system's board, said Monday that a problem with chlorination equipment at the well site prompted the advisory against drinking the water.
However, Smith said the issue “was not a bacteria problem with the system,” but an inability to maintain required chlorination levels.
“We had a chlorine pump that blew a diaphragm, and we also had a plugged-up line going to the water for the chlorination," he said Monday. "So there were four days when we weren’t getting any chlorine into the system, so we had to do a boil water notice."
