The celebration opened with a performance from the Sundown Lane Elementary choir, whose students sang a series of Christmas songs as families packed into the civic center lobby to escape the cold wind outside. When the final song ended, the crowd joined in a countdown as the tree lit up for the season.

As the lights came on, parents crowded the nearby hallways, snapping photos of their children in front of the tree and holiday displays. Families lined up for pictures, filling the lobby with excited voices and the sound of kids pointing out decorations to grandparents.
