Northumbria Police will be asked to review its powers to crack down on people using face coverings for the purposes of crime or anti-social behaviour.
The Mayor of North Tyneside has pledged to ask Northumbria to review its powers, under Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, to require people to unmask in events or situations linked to anti-social behaviour (ASB). The Mayor will also write to the Home Secretary to lobby for more powers for local councils to help stop face coverings being misused for the purposes of crime or ASB.
The Mayor’s response was prompted by a published question at full council from Chirton and Percy Main councillor Rebecca O’Keefe.
