BUFFALO, N.Y. — With demand rising at food pantries across Western New York, Tops Friendly Markets and Feedmore WNY are teaming up to help in a big and sustainable, way. The Tops Fresh Recovery program rescues high-quality food that can no longer be sold but is still perfectly safe and nutritious, diverting it from the landfill and sending it directly to neighbors who need it most.
At Tops stores, workers move quickly behind the scenes each day, identifying food that is still edible but may no longer meet retail standards.
“It's a program that we've enacted at Tops the last number of years in response to a NYS law that's come into effect to recycle and reduce food waste," Courtney Mailhot, Tops Community Relations Manager, told 2 On Your Side.
