A potential firing of Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube shouldn’t happen without a look at the roster that general manager Brad Treliving has constructed.
It’s only early December, yet it appears obvious that the Leafs will be in a fight for their playoff lives for the rest of the 2025-26 season. Under no circumstance should Berube feel secure in his job right now.
Thirteen players remain from the full roster of the last game of Sheldon Keefe’s coaching tenure in Toronto, in May 2024 against the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Of course, that group includes the Leafs’ three best current forwards — captain Auston Matthews , William Nylander and John Tavares — as well as defencemen Morgan Rielly and Jake McCabe.
Treliving has made some good decision
