A Sussex County woman says her neighbor shot and killed her 1½-year-old deaf dog on Thanksgiving Day after the pet got loose in front of her house.
Carrie Conklin, of Wantage, said her pit bull, Boe, was shot in the street, even though the pet had never hurt anyone.
“While our dog had never shown aggression toward people or animals in our care, we recognize that emotions and perceptions during unexpected situations can differ,” Conklin said in an email to NJ Advance Media on Tuesday.
“The individual involved used a .22-caliber rifle, and the incident is currently under active investigation by law enforcement,” Conklin said.
A New Jersey State Police spokesperson said the dog was shot shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday near a home on Mudtown Road.
Boe was taken to a nearby veterinary hospit
