The bill to redistrict Indiana mid-decade cleared its first legislative hurdle on Dec. 2, easily passing the House elections committee despite hours of testimony in opposition.

Eight Republicans voted yes, while four Democrats and a lone Republican, Rep. Tim Yocum of Clinton, voted no , amid threats from President Donald Trump to primary those who resist his push to redistrict in Indiana. Lawmakers on both sides of the issue have also been targeted by swatting attempts and threats of violence.

The legislation, which splits Indianapolis into four districts and gives Republicans the advantage in all nine districts, now moves to the full House floor. Previously House Speaker Todd Huston said his caucus had the votes to pass the new map.
