SUMMIT COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) - Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has signed a bill into law that’s designed to notify you when a felon escapes custody.

It was all prompted by a series of 19 Investigates reports.

The governor quietly signed House Bill 23 Monday afternoon. It’s also known as “The Escaped Convict Alert Program”, or ECAP.

H.B. 23 was passed unanimously in both the House of Representatives this past June and in the Senate last month.

ECAP would create a system similar to an AMBER Alert, notifying people on their computers and smartphones whenever a felon escapes in their area.

“We think that there should be a notification system for escaped felons,” Representative Bill Roemer (R) told the Senate in October.
