A dog found a new home after a New Mexico family rescued him from a pile of trash. Nearly a year later, he was out on a walk with his owner when several bullets hit him.

Nicole Tatum was walking her dog, Ringo, on a trail north of Rio Rancho, N.M., on Friday, Nov. 28, when a random act of cruelty disrupted their quiet time out in nature, Tatum recalled in an interview with local outlet KOB 4 .
