RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond has received 45% less snow than normal over the past five years.

The winter seasons of 2022-23 and 2023-2024 rank among the top five least snowy on record, according to National Weather Service data.

Larry Brown, a Senior Meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Wakefield and our go-to climate expert, said snowfall has declined over the past 25 years. He notes that somes years have been snowy; there is significant variation from year to year.

“When you look at like 100 years, it’s going down overall,” Brown said. “Richmond, Central Virginia in general has been the most below normal for the region.”

Since 2020, even Norfolk has received more snow than Richmond.
