ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) — The Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office said there is a scam going around asking the public for thousands of dollars.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said a community member notified the office of the scam on Monday. The caller said they received a warrant from the U.S. District Court via text message, claiming the caller had to be $45,000 or they would be arrested.

The scammer offered a 10 percent option, claiming to be one of the captains of the sheriff’s office, according to Dep. Richard Walker.

“There is so much wrong with this fake warrant,” Ravenell said. “Money being demanded through a text message, my county officer serving a federal warrant, no attorneys are to get involved, and you’re being arrested for being a witness in a civil case.”
