DONE at the death. Newcastle United were almost there in the fifth minute of stoppage time against Tottenham, only for an overhead kick from the most unlikely of sources, centre-half Cristian Romero, to deny them two points.
Romero’s remarkable finish after Aaron Ramsdale punched a corner into his path was his second goal of the night, condemning Newcastle to a 2-2 draw in a game they had dominated for most of the evening without ever turning their general superiority into a flurry of clear-cut chances.
They scored twice themselves, through a fine low finish from Bruno Guimaraes and a penalty from the Brazilian’s fellow substitute, Anthony Gordon, but were unable to see things out.
