WESTLAKE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A suspect accused of stabbing a man was shot by a Los Angeles police detective in the Westlake District on Tuesday, according to the police department.

Police said it started when a plainclothes detective for LAPD saw a man pull out a knife and start stabbing another man around 11 a.m. in the area of Alvarado Street and Olympic Boulevard, about three blocks south of MacArthur Park.

LAPD says the detective intervened and ordered the suspect to drop the knife, but was forced to open fire.

"The suspect, described as a male, was struck by gunfire, and when additional units arrived, the suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to receive medical treatment. He is in stable condition," said Officer J. Chaves with LAPD. "The victim was
