High-level discussions between Russia and the United States aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine concluded without any compromise on key issues, particularly territorial disputes. Yuri Ushakov, a senior adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, described the talks as "useful" but acknowledged that significant work remains to be done.

The meeting took place in the Kremlin and involved US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff. It lasted nearly five hours and was part of a renewed effort by the Trump administration to broker peace in Ukraine. Ushakov stated that while some American proposals were deemed acceptable, others did not align with Russia's interests. He emphasized that the discussions focused on the framework of the US peace proposal rather than specific wording.

Ushakov remarked, "So far we haven’t found a compromise, but some American solutions can be discussed." He also noted that the territorial issue remains a major sticking point, stating, "Without resolving this, we see no resolution to the crisis."

The US peace plan, which has undergone revisions following criticism from Kyiv and European capitals, has raised concerns about being overly accommodating to Russian demands. The initial proposal included contentious points, such as Ukraine ceding the eastern Donbas region to Russia and abandoning its NATO aspirations.

Ushakov indicated that while some aspects of the proposal were discussed, there were still disagreements. He said, "We could agree on some things, but other things provoked criticism."

In parallel developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has insisted that Ukraine must be included in any negotiations regarding its future. He expressed the need for transparency in the talks, stating, "There will be no simple solutions. What matters most is that nothing is decided without Ukraine."

The discussions come amid heightened tensions, with Putin accusing European nations of sabotaging peace efforts and supporting continued conflict. He stated, "They are on the side of war," and warned that Russia is prepared for military confrontation if provoked.

As the situation evolves, both sides recognize the need for ongoing dialogue, with Ushakov confirming that contacts will continue. The path to peace remains uncertain, with both the US and Russia acknowledging the complexities involved in reaching a resolution that satisfies all parties, particularly regarding territorial integrity and security guarantees for Ukraine.
