DES MOINES, Iowa —

A Des Moines teen was injured after accidentally shooting himself in the leg, according to Des Moines police.

Police were called to Broadlawns Medical Center shortly after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a shooting incident. A preliminary investigation found that a woman brought a handgun into Broadlawns while at the facility for a scheduled appointment. She left her purse with her 14-year-old son, according to investigators.

The teen accessed the gun while alone in the room and accidentally fired it, striking himself in the leg. Hospital staff then moved him to receive emergency care and secured the firearm.

"There is no evidence that indicates any intent to threaten or harm anyone," according to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department.
