An inspection has identified concerns around out of date food and a “continuously coughing” member of staff in a kitchen area at a Redcar nursing home.

Silver Mews was subject to a visit from Redcar and Cleveland Council’s food safety team, only being given a ‘1’ in the Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings (zero being the worst and 5 the best), meaning major improvement necessary.

The inspection found several foods in a fridge beyond their use-by date including corned beef, baked beans and grated cheese.

The inspection findings said: “Food sold beyond its use-by date may be unsafe and presents a risk of bacterial growth that could lead to food poisoning.
