The Department for Work and Pensions has had a crackdown on three benefits greenlit. The Public Authorities (Fraud, Error, and Recovery) Act has received royal assent in the House of Lords, meaning it is one step closer to beginning.
The new powers will mean the DWP can check bank accounts for suspicious activity, as it tries to clamp down on fraud and error. The Bill states: "A Bill to make provision about the prevention of fraud against public authorities and the making of erroneous payments by public authorities; about the recovery of money paid by public authorities as a result of fraud or error; and for connected purposes."
The Bill will focus on the three benefits with the highest rates of fraud - Universal Credit , ESA and Pension Credit.
