An 'atmospheric' and 'heart-wrenching' period drama is set to air on BBC4 tonight. Starring Tara Fitzgerald, Cathy Murphy, Toby Stephens and Jackson Ellis Leach, this 1996 adaptation of Anne Brontë's novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall was filmed in Cumbria and originally released as a three-part series in November 1996.
The plot revolves around the enigmatic young widow, Helen Graham, who moves to the secluded Wildfell Hall with her son, sparking village gossip. Local farmer Gilbert Markham finds himself drawn to her but struggles to comprehend her history.
Eventually, Helen shares her past through a diary she gives to Gilbert, revealing her traumatic marriage to the abusive Arthur Huntingdon and her subsequent escape to start anew.
