There is a critical need for outer island fire volunteers. Since 1958, San Juan Island Fire & Rescue has relied on volunteers as the backbone of local fire protection. Many of our stations were built by neighbors and remain staffed by residents committed to community safety and affordable insurance.
Right now, several outer stations face a drastic shortage of volunteers. This means local response in those areas could be delayed or ineffective during emergencies. Without volunteers, we cannot meet state standards that protect lives and property — and insurance ratings for the entire island could suffer.
