Wawa's monthslong bid to build a convenience store and gas station on the east side has not only been revived, but now has a better chance of succeeding after a granular last-minute change to how the city counts gas pumps in areas zoned for walkable development.
Since June, the Department of Metropolitan Development has opposed the planned Wawa on East Washington Street, in part because the company sought to build too many gas pumps along the path of the future Blue Line bus rapid transit route. The city held that Wawa's plans to build 12-16 pumps would have violated the 2021 transit-oriented development ordinance , which allows no more than eight pumps at a gas station within 1,000 feet of a BRT route.
