A former Clevelander fighting with the Israel Defense Forces was injured in battle on Nov. 27 in Syria alongside five other Israel Defense Forces soldiers and has undergone surgery.

Yedidya Rothner, a commander, was wounded when the IDF conducted an operation to apprehend suspects from the Jamaa Islamiya terrorist group in Beit Jin, Syria, which was planning improvised explosive devices and rocket attacks into Israel. The IDF said that terrorists opened fire at the troops, injuring six, and that troops returned fire, including bringing in air support, according to The Associated Press.

Since the fall of former Syrian President Bashar Assad in December 2024, the IDF has held a part of southern Syria that was previously a U.N.-patrolled buffer zone under a 1974 disengagement agreement.
