OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — The U.S. Department of Energy awarded the Tennessee Valley Authority a $400 million grant to help develop small modular reactors.
The department awarded a total of $800 million to help develop the reactors. The other $400 million went to Holtec Government Services, a government contractor in New Jersey. The money will help develop and construct the first Gen III+ small modular reactor. TVA applied for the grant back in May.
According to a press release from the DOE, TVA is developing the GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300, a small modular reactor, at the Clinch River Nuclear site. The company plans to send that reactor to Indiana Michigan Power and Elementl. TVA will also be working with nuclear supply chain partners.
