On Monday, Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) introduced the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025 to establish that citizens of the United States must have “sole and exclusive allegiance to the United States.”

Dual citizenship has been legally recognized in the United States since 1967, while Moreno’s bill argues that "to preserve the integrity of national citizenship, allegiance to the United States must be undivided."

The introduced bill also states that the current law allows certain United States citizens to maintain foreign citizenship, which Moreno states could create conflicts of interest. Senator Moreno’s Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025 would require them to forfeit their dual citizenship.
