NORTH PROVIDENCE – The North Providence Fire Department has started its annual hiring process, and according to Fire Chief John Horan, they will be looking to add four firefighters to the mix this time around.

Horan told The North Providence Breeze that circumstances related to retention have improved dramatically over the past year from when departments statewide were seeing firefighters jump ship, often shortly after getting hired.

The new law in the state requiring that the receiving community notify the one it’s taking a firefighter from 10 days prior to a transaction taking place, and to pay prorated amounts for the training the firefighter had received, is paying off with less movement, said Horan.
