Culpeper County Sheriff

A woman in Virginia woke up to a stranger standing over her in her bedroom during a terrifying invasion after he made himself right at home, officials said.

The break-in was reported in the early hours of Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Stonehaven subdivision on the north end of Route 229, according to the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the woman managed to escape only because the suspect briefly walked away to grab items he had left behind as she made a dash to her neighbor's home to call 911.

The woman told deputies she woke to find a man standing above her in her bedroom after the man broke in through a basement window and stayed inside the home long enough to turn on the TV without waking the victim.

During a search of the home, deputies say that they recovered items that the suspect — who has yet to be identified — left behind during the break-in.

The suspect was described as being a White man with a thin build between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8 with short blonde or brown hair. He had no facial hair and was wearing camouflage pants and a plain short-sleeve T-shirt at the time.

“We have had deputies and detectives going door to door speaking with neighborhood residents,” Sheriff T.W. Chilton said. “We are obviously looking for any help we can get, witnesses, ring camera videos, security videos, of any suspicious persons or vehicles.

"This type of crime creates fear and takes the peace and privacy from the victim. Please, if you saw anything, contact us so we can bring this to justice."
