A closely watched Tennessee special congressional election on Tuesday, Dec. 2, had Nashville and the entire nation on edge. While the GOP ultimately declared victory, it revealed that Democrats in the red state have gained ground.
A tight win in the Volunteer State warded off a major upset in a race that drew President Donald Trump’s help to avoid a GOP disaster in District 7, an overwhelmingly Republican area.
A blue city surrounded by a sea of red, Nashville – which is in Davidson County, as well as its surrounding counties of Montgomery (Clarksville) and Williamson (Franklin) – took to the polls to choose the next District 7 leader, yielding a close Republican win.
The election was held to fill the seat following the resignation of Republican Rep. Mark Green. Here's who won the race for state’s 7th Congressional District.
Who won the Tennessee's special election?
Republican candidate Matt Van Epps won the District 7 seat on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
The 34-year-old combat veteran and former commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, overtook Aftyn Behn, a progressive Democratic state representative, by single digits, USA TODAY reported.
Trump publicly backed Van Epps ahead of the race, telling GOP voters in the area that "the whole world is watching" the special election.
“This is just an incredible win. Tonight you sent a message loud and clear: The people of Middle Tennessee stand with President Donald J. Trump,” Van Epps told cheering supporters after notching his win.
Still, the victory over Behn was a potential warning sign for Republicans less than a year from the 2026 midterm elections because Trump comfortably won the area by more than 20 points in 2024. Democrats are hoping to take back Congress next year from Republicans, who control both the House and Senate.
Who is Aftyn Behn?
Behn, 36, has represented the 51st district of the Tennessee House of Representatives since 2023.
Behn appeared to win a majority of the early vote, but Van Epps used a massive Republican turnout on Election Day ‒ boosted by an aggressive last-minute push by Trump and other national Republicans ‒ to carry him to victory.
The race turned into a surprisingly tight contest as Democrats nationally benefitted from reinvigorated voter enthusiasm. Trump and some other Republican leaders have also seen sinking poll numbers in recent weeks.
A former community organizer and progressive activist, she relied on an enthusiastic base of young voters and a robust social media presence.
In her campaign, Behn leaned into a similar affordability theme that carried Democrats in the off-year elections, highlighting her support to end the state's grocery tax and campaigning on lowering health costs. She has embraced a pragmatic slogan: "Feed kids, fix roads, and fund hospitals."
The close Southern race comes after Abigail Spanberger in Virginia and Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey helped deliver Democrats' strong election performance last month.
