It's more bad news for Larry Summers, the Harvard professor and former top finance official for the White House, after emails showed his close and often cozy relationship with the late accused pedophile and notorious sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
The prestigious American Economic Association issued a lifetime ban on Summers after he recently resigned from the group, the group said.
“Effective immediately, the AEA has imposed a lifetime prohibition on Mr. Summers’ attending, speaking at, or otherwise participating in AEA-sponsored events or activities, including serving in any editorial or refereeing capacity for AEA journals,” the group said in a news release.
The AEA is made up of more than 17,000 of the most influential economists in the United States. The group said Summers’ behavior was unacceptable.
“The AEA condemns Mr. Summers’ conduct … as fundamentally inconsistent with its standards of professional integrity,” the group said.
The US House Oversight Committee last month released about 20,000 emails from Epstein and dozens of high-ranking officials from both sides of the political aisle. Summers exchanged several messages with the late sex trafficker, making sexist remarks and seeking romantic advice.
More emails are expected to be released later this month, officials have said.
Summers, who served as Director of the National Economic Council under President Barack Obama, said he was “deeply ashamed” by the emails and recognized “the pain they have caused.”
He has stepped back from his public roles, including taking leave as a professor at Harvard University, while the school investigates the matter. He previously served as Harvard's president.
He also resigned his seat on the board of OpenAI, which operates ChatGPT.
