President Donald Trump no longer holds regular campaign rallies. The raucous events that propelled him twice to the presidency have mostly been left in the past. After all, he can’t serve a third term, and so he’s traded those revival-style encounters with the MAGA faithful for the loftier trappings of presidential office: splashy foreign trips , golf outings in South Florida, and televised Cabinet meetings.
On Tuesday he held the ninth such meeting of his second term. Under Trump, these events have taken the form of marathon servility sessions during which members of the Cabinet compete to out-praise the commander in chief. It’s the opening scene of King Lear, over and over again. There are no Cordelias.
The showcases typically open with an extended monologue from Trump himself. T
